Licensing of Taxis and Private Hire Vehicles

Taxis and Private Hire vehicles are an important transport service for the local community. The drivers, vehicles and operators are regulated under the Town Police Clauses Act 1847, Local Government (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 1976, and other smaller pieces of legislation.

Taxis, also known as Hackney Carriages are permitted to apply for hire and service the ranks within the Borough. Private hire vehicles must be booked through a licensed operator.
