Ash from the Eyjafjallajökull volcano in Iceland has disrupted air traffic all over Europe, including Gatwick Airport. Click on the link for the latest flight information.
The Council's air quality monitoring system detected higher than normal levels of fine particles in the area on Sunday afternoon 18 April. Other monitoring systems across the South East have also detected a spike in readings. This is probably due to some of the dust from the volcano dropping from high altitude and reaching ground level. This sort of level is not considered dangerous for short periods, although the Health Protection Agency has advised that it would be wise for people suffering from existing lung problems such as asthma to limit their activities outdoors if they start to notice symptoms such as itchy eyes.
