Streams and Rivers

Crawley is criss-crossed by several rivers. These rivers are currently being surveyed for their nature conservation interest. Many improvements to the rivers have already been made by the Environment Agency to improve fish stocks.

Bewbush Brook feeds the Bewbush Water Gardens and then into Ifield Mill Pond, along with Broadfield Brook which flows through Broadfield Park.

Stanford Brook flows through Maidenbower, through the playing fields and past Maidenbower Place, and then joins up with Gatwick Stream. You can follow the course of both streams through Maidenbower, along riverside walks such as Cranmer Walk. Gatwick Stream continues up past Hazelwick Avenue, and into Grattons Playing Field, Pound Hill, and then on past the Airport.

Crawter's Brook flows through the Manor Royal Industrial Estate, passing through Manor Royal Flood Pond Conservation Area.

What to do about Flooding

Crawley's Amenity Services Division are responsible for keeping any open ditches, culverts or rivers clear of obstructions, in parks and open spaces which come under their ownership. This is to ensure a clear and unobstructed passage of water through the ditch or channel. So, if you see a blocked ditch or river in a park area or open space, please let us know.

Most flooding in Crawley is due to the sheer volume of water going into streams and rivers after persistent heavy rain. If you are affected by flooding, you can call Amenity Services at the number below.

Crawley Borough Council is not responsible for maintenance or clearance of pipes where water passes underground. This is responsibility of Thames Water.

Water pollution in rivers comes under the responsibility of Environment Agency and should be reported directly to them.
