Health and Safety

Health and safety legislation applies to everyone at work. This includes employers, employees and the self employed.

Employers are required to take reasonable steps to protect their workers regarding their safety, health and welfare.

Health and safety matters also apply to others who could be affected by work activities, for example, members of the public, visitors and contractors.

Enforcement of the law and regulations are enforced by either the Council or the Health and Safety Executive, depending on the activity of the workplace.

Health and safety officers at Crawley Borough Council inspect commercial premises under the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 on a pre programmed basis following a risk priority system. This allows us to check on businesses to make sure they are complying with the law and to ensure and encourage safer working environments.

Officers also investigate accidents at work and advise businesses on precautions to take to prevent harm and future occurrences by promoting better and safer working practices.

As well as enforcement, officers at the Council also possess an advisory role providing information to members of the public, the employed and self employed and commercial and voluntary sector businesses.

Our offices are open Mon - Thurs 08:45 - 17:20, Fri 08:45 - 16:25.
