Save cash at Christmas: It is estimated that up to 1 billion Christmas cards (17 for every man, woman and child) could end up in bins across the UK this year. Instead of buying loads, send home-made ones, or send e-cards. If you prefer to re-use last year's cards - or plan to re-use any you receive this year - invest in 'Seasons Greetings' labels - visit http://www.foe.co.uk/pubsinfo/pubscat/living.html#greeting_c

The Greenzone, Crawley Council's environmental education centre in Tilgate Park, gives practical tips for reducing your ‘carbon footprint’. This former depot and tractor shed has been completely revamped as a mock-up house and garden displaying ways in which we can lessen our impact on the environment, from using recycled materials to water friendly toilets.
Visitors can take part in interactive games and activities and go home with practical ideas on greener living that can easily be incorporated into everyday life.
The building has been designed to be as environmentally sensitive as possible.

The GreenZone currently features a carbon calculator wall and gives visitors a chance to find out more about water conservation, energy efficiency and how to ‘Reduce, Reuse and Recycle’ their waste in order to have a positive impact on the environment.
GreenZone is playing a major part in changing the way we lead our lives, so that future generations can enjoy the environment in which we currently live.
Mayor Howard Bloom presented eco-goodie bag prizes to the winners of an environmentally themed art competition, organised by Thomas Bennett Community College and Crawley Borough Council.
The Eco-Art was created using rubbish and is on display in the Greenzone. First prize went to Erin Kenward, Tayla Barnard-Rance and Hannah Bettison, who created the piece ‘Under the Sea’ using a variety of materials, such as bottle tops, rope and a china tea cup.
If you are interested in entering the 2009 competition for secondary schools please contact Dorinda Kealoha on 01293 438769 or email Dorinda.Kealoha@crawley.gov.uk .
Three 'green' gardens are adjacent to the GreenZone:
• Wildlife Garden - attracting native and visiting birds, insects and other wildlife
• Recycled Garden - incorporating a wide range of recycled mulches and re-used junk items.
• Low Water Garden - a drought resistant, dry garden designed to thrive on rainfall alone.
