Council tightens up on bin contamination after recycling goes to landfill

The council is warning residents it will not be able to collect their REDtop bins if they put non-recyclables in their fortnightly collections. This is because recycling bins that contain materials that can't be recycled will be rejected from the recycling sorting station and sent to landfill instead. Find out more about contamination and what can and cannot be placed in your REDtop bin or REDBox.

We provide a fortnightly recycling service to its residents plus a number of recycling points throughout the town.

REDbox/REDtop wheeled bin service

In 2002 we gave you a REDbox to recycle paper and cardboard. Since then however you told us that you would like to recycle more materials from your home, so in 2005 we introduced REDtop wheeled bins*. The REDtop recycling scheme provides residents with a wheeled bin(s) that is stored outside of your house and allows you to recycle a larger amount of recycled material. Bins have a dark green base and red coloured lid and are emptied on a fortnightly basis.

Broadfield Courts

If you live in the Broadfield Courts, please visit the letter residents were sent which explains the recycling service for this area.

*In some areas however, we are unable to distribute REDtop bins because of operational or location factors and some homes within the borough still operate the REDbox scheme. You can place the same recyclables as the REDtop service into the boxes and you can have as many REDboxes as you wish.

Recycling points

As well as picking up recycled materials from your home, there are also 20 Neighbourhood Recycling Points located at supermarkets, shopping parades and in some residential areas.
