Since 1 April 2011, West Sussex County Council has been responsible for the national concessionary travel. There are be some changes from the Crawley scheme – the key differences are are a later start time (9.30am) for older people’s passes and all day travel for disabled people. Crawley Borough Council will continue to issue and renew passes.
All new applications for age related bus passes will run for 5 years.
All new disabled bus passes will be valid for 5 years and then reviewed (except for 7. in the list below which will be reviewed yearly). If circumstances have not changed then passes will be renewed as detailed above, if circumstances have changed we will contact you and will confirm.
You could be entitled to concessions on rail or bus travel if you live in Crawley and are either of pensionable age, or a disabled person who:
1. is profoundly or severely deaf
2. is registered blind or partially sighted
3. is without speech
4. has a disability that has a substantial and long-term adverse effect on your ability to walk
5. does not have arms or has long-term loss of the use of both arms
6. has a learning disability, that is, a state of arrested or incomplete development of mind which includes significant impairment of intelligence and social functioning
7. would have an application to drive a motor vehicle refused due to physical fitness (other than on the grounds of persistent misuse of drugs or alcohol)
What is eligible age?
Eligibility for a bus pass (based on age) is tied to the State Pension age - the earliest age at which you can claim your State Pension.
If you were born before 6 April 1950, you are eligible from your 60th birthday.
However, if you were born after 5 April 1950, you will need to check. The State Pension age for women is changing. This means that the age at which both men and women become eligible for a bus pass is changing too.
To check at what age you become eligible, enter your sex and date of birth into the State Pension age calculator .
All bus passes are renewed automatically and are sent out to you. If you do not receive your new pass a week before it is due to expire please contact us on 01293 438635. Please ensure that you notify the council of any change to your personal details, such as a change of address, to ensure your new card is sent to the correct address. You can also come into the Town Hall and see a customer service advisor between 8am and 6pm.
