Countryside sign CBC’s Crawley commitment

Developers of a Bewbush housing site have today made their commitment to Crawley promise.

Countryside, one of Crawley Borough Council’s current developer partners, is constructing 112 homes in Breezehurst Drive which is set to be complete by the end of 2015.

The site includes 61 per cent affordable housing, 40 council own build homes for rent, plus 18 rental and 10 shared-ownership homes for housing association, Moat Housing.

Countryside made their promise today by signing the council’s Crawley Developer and Partner Charter.

Signed by Paul Sweeney, Head of Community and Customer Services for Countryside, and Cllr Bob Lanzer, Cabinet member for Planning and Economic Development, the charter encourages developers, their contractors and council partners to make the most of all the opportunities for local people and businesses.

Speaking at the signing, Paul Sweeney said: “We’re committed to the principles the charter sets out and believe they are the basis for how a successful project should run.

“Developments like this take a long time to bring forward and it’s only right we deliver sustainable opportunities for the community and local businesses.”

Once signed up, developers and partners will need to demonstrate their willingness to employ local people, create local supplier opportunities and contribute to raising skills for people in the area.

Examples include committing to providing apprenticeships, promoting opportunities for local businesses to provide services and materials, keeping local people well-informed, supporting local initiatives and working closely with local organisations like Central Sussex College and secondary schools to promote the value of skills and training.

Cllr Bob Lanzer, said: “A number of partners have signed the charter now and we’re very pleased to have Countryside on board too.

“It’s a fantastic way for our partners to demonstrate their commitment to bettering the opportunities for local people; making development and investment an all-round win- win situation.”
