Housing and Planning Act 2016

The Housing and Planning Act became law in May 2016 but most of the changes won’t take place until 2017 at the earliest.  

These changes will affect council tenants, including the possibility of higher rents in some cases. We will also need to review and revise our tenancy policy.

We are waiting for more information from the government on how the changes will affect council tenants and when they will start.

‘Pay to stay’ scrapped

In November 2016 the proposed introduction of ‘Pay to Stay’ for high income tenants was scrapped.

Council’s and housing associations are still able to implement a voluntary scheme if they wish and this can be found in the Guidance on rents for social housing . Crawley Borough Council have no plans to do this.
