Renewable Energy

Renewable energy, used for power, light and heat, is generated from sources that are sustainable and generally non-polluting to the environment. However it is strongly recommended that energy efficiency measures are considered before energy generation which is generally more expensive.

What Kinds of Renewable Energy are Available?

There are a number of renewable energy technologies that can be installed by households in Crawley including:

Take Action

It is now possible to buy electricity through the national grid to your home or business, which has been generated from renewable sources - usually from wind turbines or small scale hydro-electric plants.

The Green Electricity Marketplace website www.greenelectricity.org gives you details of all the ‘green’ tariffs on offer to UK domestic and business customers.

Feed-in Tariffs

Under this scheme energy suppliers make regular payments to householders and communities who generate their own electricity from renewable or low carbon sources such as solar electricity (PV) panels or wind turbines.

The scheme guarantees a minimum payment for all electricity generated by the system, as well as a separate payment for the electricity exported to grid. These payments are in addition to the bill savings made by using the electricity generated on-site.

For more information visit the Energy Saving Trust’s Feed-in Tariff scheme website. The website also provides some guidance on what to consider if you are offered free solar PV schemes.

Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI)

The proposed RHI will provide financial support for those who install renewable heating, which qualifies for support under the scheme. The government has consulted on the proposals and is reviewing the responses and will be setting out detailed proposals on how to address renewable heat through the Spending Review.

For more information on the proposed scheme, consultation responses and updates please view the RHI consultation information on the Department of Energy and Climate Change website.
