Data Protection and GDPR

The Law on Data Protection changed from 25 May 2018 with the implementation of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

What is the General Data Protection Regulation?

GDPR is a regulation in EU law on data protection and privacy for all individuals within the European Union. It aims to give you control over your personal data that the government and other organisations store about you.

The UK government is currently working on a replacement for the Data Protection Act 1998.

What will the new law mean to me?

Time frames

We will write to confirm that we have received your request. We might also ask for more information to locate your data.

We will disclose your personal data to you within the statutory time limit of one month of receipt of your request. If your request is complex we may need to extend the period of compliance by up to a further two months. We will inform you of this within one month of receipt of your request and explain why the extension is necessary.

There is no fee payable. However, we will charge a fee based on the administrative cost if:

We will acknowledge receipt of your completed application form in writing, and ask for any further information we need to enable us to process your request.

Your request will be completed without undue delay.

In the case of rectification and data portability your request will be completed within one month of receipt. If your request is complex we may need to extend this by up to a further two months. We will inform you of this within one month of receipt of the request and explain why the extension is necessary.

If we decide that it is not appropriate to comply with your request we will explain why.
